This piece was first thrown on the potters wheel then a sculpting tool was used to tease small pieces of the clay away from the surface of the form with out completely penetrating the vessels wall.
A balance was struck between the parts of the form left intact and the removed parts, creating a sense of artistic harmony and equilibrium.
A specially formulated raku glaze with metallic components, and copper was applied to the surface of the form, it then was placed in a raku kiln and fired until the glaze became molten and fluid, and bubble free, after the pot was removed from the kiln, with fire tongs while wearing a fire jacket and face shield, and placed in a metal drum. The drum was filled with combustible materials such as newspaper and wood shavings. As soon as the pot was placed in the chamber it burst into flames because of its high temperature. An assistant then covered the drum with a lid- suffocating the oxygen from the drum as the combustibles continued to burn, forming a high carbon atmosphere. This causes iridescent flashing on the copper contained in the glaze surface. The carbon in the drums atmosphere also turns the clay body a jet black as well a penetrating into the micro cracks on the glaze surface. This imparts attribute of an aged look to the form.
This piece is now in the possession of a private collector.
Although raku is a beautiful technique for producing pottery it does not lend itself well to functional forms. Raku is a lower firing process. It imparts a micro-porosity to the ware which makes it seep or become damp when filled with water, so don't place a water and flower filled pot on your grandmother's heirloom burl wood furniture. Also food particles can seep into the clay body in raku fired ware which make an ideal place for microorganisms to grow. So you cant really clean it and if you put spaghetti or some wet food stuffs in it you'll never really get it out, and could get sick if you eat again out of it later. At One Dream Design we never use the raku firing process for functional ware.
