Language choice

Recent history has seen the raku name assimilated by and attached firmly to the work of Western artists, and so has arisen some difficulty with its use. In a now famous craft conference held in Kyoto in 1979 a heated debate sprang up between the American potters, Paul Soldner and Rick Hirsch, and the present Mr Raku, who maintained that only he had the right to call his work 'raku' under the emperor's ancient 'patent'. It is an important point that the name 'raku' to this man was not, as is perceived in the West a title or description of a particular technique, but the name attached to the potter producing in the West, Therefore, logically any work by other craftsmen should be made under their own names i.e. Soldner ware or Hirsch ware. Facing the daunting prospect of locking antlers with a man with hundreds of years of Japanese culture behind him, Soldner himself suggested a solution. As many things in American seamed to be done in an opposite way to Japan then why not call the work 'Ukar', the opposite of 'Raku'.

Unfortunately, Soldner was by then too late as the name 'raku' had, for better or worse, already entered the language of potters and indeed that of the wider appreciative public.
