Medical Illustration of the Structure of a Coronary Artery


This illustration was produced in watercolor, air brush and acrylics on illustration board.
How it was done.

    First a detailed sketch was completed by examining scanning electron micrographs, and transmission light microscopy images, of arterial histology samples. These were extrapolated into a three dimensional view of what the artery would look like removed from the surrounding tissue with the cellular structure emphasized -to make the image diagrammatic.
    In a graphite pencil drawing on drafting vellum, a composite was made. This image was then transferred to the drawing surface in pastel dust. A water color rendering of the textural area was completed. Then a mask was cut from air brushing and painting the background. After the background was painted the artery was airbrushed in sections. The final art was then sprayed with a workable fixative and accent dark areas in watercolor were placed in the painting. Colored pencil was used for some last touches.
